The person observing fast on this day should worship Lord Shri Vishnu, the maintainer of all. God said, now I tell you the story of Ekadashi, you listen carefully. There was a devout Brahmin named Sumedh, who lived in the city of Kampilya with his pious wife named Pavitra.
He was very poor due to the sins committed in his past lives, he did not even get alms. He had neither food to eat, nor clothes to wear, nor a house to live. But still his beautiful wife served him with great devotion. Many times she herself would remain hungry while serving the guests, but still she would not say anything to her husband.
In this way, seeing his wife getting weaker day by day, the Brahmin started cursing himself, and said to his wife that dear, I do not get anything even after begging from very rich people, should I go abroad and get money. Maybe then I will get whatever is in my destiny.
After listening to this statement of Sumedha, his wife Pavitra said, there is no one as intelligent as you here, in fact whatever is achieved is achieved according to the deeds of the previous births, so O Lord, it seems that the former You and I did not do any good deeds in our birth, due to which we are in this condition in this birth.
Pavitra said that O Swami, I cannot live without you, without a husband, a woman's mother, father, brother, mother-in-law, father-in-law and all relatives condemn her, so please don't go anywhere, O Swami, which will be written in fate. He will be found by staying here.
After listening to his wife's statement, the Brahmin gave up the idea of going abroad. By chance one day Kaundanya Rishi came there. Seeing him, Sumedha and his wife were overjoyed and bowed down to him.
By giving him a seat, he worshiped him according to his ability and said that our life has been blessed by your darshan, O Rishivar. According to his capacity, he fed the sage. After that Pavitra asked him that O Munivar, how will our poverty go away.
Pavitra said that my husband was going abroad to get money, but I have forbidden him to go. Surely it is our good fortune that today you have come here, please tell us some solution that can remove our poverty.
Hearing the words of Pavitra, Rishi Kaundanya said that the very auspicious Ekadashi falls in the Krishna Paksha of Adhik month, and its name is Parama, which was first followed by Kubera, so that Lord Bhole Shankar was pleased with him, and He had given him the boon of attaining wealth.
King Harishchandra also got back his wife, children and kingdom by observing this fast. That's why you husbands, you also follow this fast.
Then Lord Shri Krishna said that O Yudhishthira, after the topic of Parama Ekadashi, Kaundanya Rishi said about the Pancharatri fast, by observing which one attains liberation. Pancharatri fast should be observed from the day of Parama Ekadashi, whoever observes this fast for five days, he gets Vaikunth Lok along with his parents.
According to the sage Kaundanya, Pavitra observed this fast, following the fast of Pancharatri, the prince of that state came to her house with the inspiration of Brahmadev, and filled her with all kinds of comforts.
The prince also donated a cow to Sumedh Brahmin, by this act that prince also attained Vaikuntha after his death. Just as the Brahmin is the best among humans, the cow among animals and Indra among the gods, so is Adhikamas the best among all months. Padmini Ekadashi and Parma Ekadashi of this month are very dear to God.
Even after getting a human body, if someone does not observe Ekadashi fast, then he does not get happiness in eighty-four lakh births, he gets only sorrow.
Human body is attained only by the deeds of previous birth, so everyone must observe Ekadashi fast. Hearing this, the Pandavas also observed this Ekadashi fast along with their wives.
On the day of Ekadashi, listen and chant the Lord's beautiful pastimes as much as possible, recite the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam, and chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra as much as possible.
