नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम्।देवीं सरस्वतीं व्यासं ततो जयमुदीरयेत्।।4।।
अनुवाद श्रील प्रभुपाद के द्वारा : विजय के साधन स्वरूप इस श्रीमद्भागवतम् का पाठ करने (सुनने) के पूर्व मनुष्य को भगवान श्रीनारायण को, नरोत्तम नर नारायण ऋषि को, विद्या की देवी माता सरस्वती को तथा ग्रन्थकार श्रील व्यासदेव को नमस्कार करना चाहिए।
तात्पर्य : सम्पूर्ण वैदिक साहित्य तथा सभी पुराण इस भौतिक जगत के गहनतम भागों पर विजय प्राप्त करने हेतु हैं। जीव अनादि काल से भौतिक इन्द्रिय तृप्ति के प्रति आसक्त होने के कारण ईश्वर के साथ अपने संबंध को भूल चुका है।
इस भौतिक जगत में मनुष्य का जीवन संघर्ष लंबा चलने वाला है, और इसके लिए कोई भी योजना बनाकर जीव का इसमें से निकल पाना असम्भव है।
यदि मनुष्य इस अविरत जीवन संघर्ष पर विजय प्राप्त करना चाहता है, तो उसे भगवान के साथ अपने नित्य संबंध को पुनः स्थापित करना होगा।
जो भी इस प्रकार के निवारक उपाय अपनाना चाहते हैं, उन्हें वेदों तथा पुराणों जैसे साहित्य का आश्रय लेना होगा। अल्पज्ञानी मनुष्यों का कहना है कि पुराणों का वेदों से किसी प्रकार का संबंध नहीं है, किन्तु ये पुराण विभिन्न प्रकार के मनुष्यों के लिए वेदों की पूरक व्याख्याएं हैं।
सभी मनुष्य एक से नहीं होते हैं।कुछ मनुष्य सतोगुणी होते हैं,कुछ रजोगुणी होते हैं और कुछ तमोगुणी होते हैं। पुराणों को इस प्रकार से विभक्त किया गया है कि किसी भी श्रेणी के मनुष्य उनसे लाभ उठा सकते हैं, और धीरे धीरे अपनी खोई हुई स्थिति को पुनः प्राप्त करके कठोर जीवन संघर्ष से बाहर निकल सकते हैं।
श्रील सूत गोस्वामी पुराणों के पाठ की विधि प्रदर्शित करते हैं। जो मनुष्य वैदिक साहित्य तथा पुराणों के उपदेशक बनना चाहते हैं,वे इस विधि का पालन कर सकते हैं। श्रीमद्भागवतम् निष्कलंक पुराण है, और यह विशेष कर उनके लिए है, जो स्थायी रूप से भवबंधन से छूटने के इच्छुक हैं।
श्रीमद्भागवतम् का यह श्लोक हमें यह समझाता है कि हम सभी अपने भौतिक इन्द्रिय तृप्ति में इतना अधिक उलझ गए हैं, जिसके कारण भगवान से अपने शाश्वत संबंध को भूल गए हैं। इस भौतिक जगत में हमारा जीवन संघर्ष दीर्घ काल तक चलने वाला है, और कुछ भी करके हम इस पर विजय प्राप्त नहीं कर सकते हैं।
यदि हम अपने इस जीवन संघर्ष पर विजय प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं ,तो इसका केवल और केवल एक ही उपाय है कि हमें भगवान से अपना नित्य संबंध पुनः स्थापित करना ही होगा , इसके अलावा दूसरा और कोई उपाय नहीं है।
Narayanam namaskritya naram chaiv narottamam
Devim sarswatim vyasam tato jay mudirayet ।।4।।
Translation by Srila Prabhupada: Before reciting (listening to) this Srimad Bhagavatam, which is the means to victory, one should bow to the Lord Sri Narayana, to the sage Narottama Nara Narayana, to Mother Saraswati, the goddess of learning, and to the author Srila Vyasadeva.
PURPORT : The entire Vedic literature and all the Puranas are meant for overcoming the deepest parts of this material world. The living entity has forgotten his relationship with God since time immemorial because he has been attached to material sense gratification.
Man's life struggle in this material world is going to be a long one, and it is impossible for him to get out of it by making any plans.
If man wants to overcome this continuous life struggle, he must reestablish his eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord.
Whoever wants to adopt such preventive measures must resort to literature like the Vedas and the Puranas. Men of little knowledge say that the Puranas have no connection with the Vedas, but these Puranas are supplementary explanations of the Vedas for different kinds of men. All men are not the same. Some men are in goodness, some in passion and some in ignorance. The Puranas are so divided that any category of men can benefit from them and gradually regain their lost position and come out of the harsh struggle of life.
Srila Suta Goswami shows the method of reading the Puranas. Men who want to become preachers of Vedic literature and the Puranas can follow this method. The Srimad Bhagavatam is the untainted Purana, and it is especially meant for those who want to be permanently free from material bondage.
This verse of the Srimad Bhagavatam explains to us that we are all so entangled in our material sense gratification that we have forgotten our eternal relationship with the Lord. Our life struggle in this material world is going to be a long one, and we cannot overcome it by anything we do.
If we want to overcome this struggle of life, there is only one way and that is to re-establish our eternal relationship with God, there is no other way.
