विजया एकादशी व्रत कथा

भगवान श्री कृष्ण को एकादशी व्रत अत्यंत प्रिय है, भगवान को पाने का सबसे सरल उपाय है एकादशी व्रत का नियमपूर्वक पालन करना। भगवान के अनन्य भक्त इस व्रत का पालन केवल इसका फल पाने हेतु नहीं, अपितु भगवान श्री कृष्ण की भक्ति पाने हेतु करते हैं।

                फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी की महिमा स्कंद पुराण में आती है। एक बार युधिष्ठिर महाराज भगवान श्री कृष्ण से पूछते हैं कि हे वासुदेव मैं फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी की महिमा सुनने की इक्षा रखता हूं, कृपया आप मुझे विस्तार पूर्वक बताएं।

                तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण युधिष्ठिर से कहते हैं कि जो व्यक्ति इस विजया एकादशी के व्रत का पालन करते हैं ,उसे इस जन्म में भी और अगले जन्म में भी निश्चित रूप से विजय प्राप्त होती है।

              ये मंगलमय एकादशी पुराने तथा नए सभी प्रकार के पापों का नाश करती है। ये एकादशी इतनी शशक्त है कि इसका केवल श्रवण करने वाले के भी सारे पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

                भगवान श्री कृष्ण युधिष्ठिर से कहते हैं कि एक बार नारद मुनि ने ब्रम्हा जी से प्रश्न पूछा कि हे देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ आप मुझे बताईए कि जो भी व्यक्ति श्रद्धा पूर्वक इस एकादशी व्रत का पालन करते हैं उन्हें क्या लाभ प्राप्त होता है।

               तब उत्तर में ब्रम्हा जी ने नारद जी से कहा कि हे नारद इस एकादशी की विधि आज तक मैंने किसी से नहीं कही, इस एकादशी का सबसे बड़ा फल इसके नाम से ही पता लगता है।

                 विजया एकादशी यानि जो समस्त मनुष्यों को विजय प्रदान कराती है। इसकी कथा कुछ इस प्रकार है,कि त्रेता युग में जब भगवान श्री राम जी को चौदह वर्ष का बनवास हुआ था, तब श्री राम, माता सीता और लक्ष्मण ये तीनों पंचवटी में भिक्षुक की तरह रहने लगे।

              जब दुष्ट रावण ने सीता माता का अपहरण कर लिया,तब प्रभु श्री राम और लक्ष्मण जी अत्यन्त व्याकुल होकर सीता माता की खोज में निकल गए। जब उन्हें रास्ते में घायल अवस्था में जटायु मिले ,तब उन्होंने श्री राम को सीता माता का वृत्तांत सुनाया।

                  कुछ और आगे जाकर उनकी सुग्रीव से मित्रता हुई , और प्रभु श्री राम ने बाली का वध किया। हनुमान जी ने लंका जाकर सीता माता का पता लगाया, और लंका दहन के बाद वापस आकर उन्होंने प्रभु श्री राम को सब कुछ बताया।

                सुग्रीव के साथ निर्णय लेकर श्री राम ने लंका जाना सुनिश्चित किया। समुद्र तट पर पहुंचने के बाद उन्होंने लक्ष्मण जी से परामर्श किया कि इस भयंकर समुद्र को कैसे पार किया जाए।

               तब लक्ष्मण जी श्री राम जी से कहते हैं कि हे रघुनंदन इस द्वीप में प्राचीन काल से वक्तालव्य नामक एक बहुत ही महान ऋषि रहते हैं। हमें उनके दर्शन करने चाहिए और उनसे पूछना चाहिए कि हम अपने लक्ष्य पर कैसे पहुंच पाएंगे।

                इस प्रकार वक्तालव्य मुनि के आश्रम में जाकर सभी ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया, इस पर आश्चर्य चकित होकर वक्तालव्य मुनि हाथ जोर कर प्रभु श्री राम से पूछते हैं कि हे प्रभु आपके यहां आने का उद्देश्य क्या है।

              तब भगवान श्री राम वक्तालव्य मुनि को कहते हैं कि हे ब्राह्मण श्रेष्ठ मैं समुद्र के तट पर पहुंचा हूं और मेरे साथ मेरी विशाल सेना है, हमें समुद्र को लांघना है, और रावण का वध करना है, और रावण पर विजय प्राप्त करनी है। कृपया आप हमें समुद्र लांघने का कोई उपाय बताईए।

               वक्तालव्य मुनि उत्तर में भगवान श्री राम को कहते हैं ,कि फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का उत्तम व्रत करने से निश्चय ही आपको विजय की प्राप्ति होगी, साथ ही साथ आप इस समुद्र को भी अवश्य ही पार कर लेंगे।

             मुनि ने कहा कि इस व्रत की विधि ये है कि दशमी के दिन सोने, चांदी, तांबा या फिर मिट्टी का एक घड़ा बनाएं, और उसमें जल भर कर उसे आम के पांच पत्तों से सजा कर उसे स्थापित करें।

                   इस कलश के नीचे सप्त अनाज रखें, और उसके ऊपर एक नारियल तथा जौ रखें। इस कलश पर नारायण भगवान की मूर्ति की स्थापना करें। एकादशी के दिन सुबह स्नान आदि करने के बाद गंध, पुष्प,धूप, दीप और नैवेद्य इत्यादि से इस कलश की पूजा करें।

                 इसके बाद एकादशी के दिन इस कलश के पास बैठ कर भगवान के पवित्र नामों का जप करें, और पूरी रात्रि जागरण कर हरि नाम का कीर्तन करें। द्वादशी तिथि को उस कलश को किसी नदी या तालाब के किनारे ले जाकर उस कलश की विधिवत पूजा करें, और फिर उस कलश को किसी योग्य ब्राह्मण को दान में दें।

                  मुनि ने कहा कि हे प्रभु यदि आप अपनी पूरी सेना सहित इस एकादशी व्रत का पालन नियम पूर्वक करेंगे तो आपकी विजय निश्चित ही होगी। प्रभु श्री राम ने मुनि के कहे अनुसार इस व्रत का पालन किया , और फिर उन्हें विजय की प्राप्ति हुई।

               इस प्रकार प्रभु श्री राम ने समस्त मानव समाज को एकादशी का महत्व दर्शाया। भगवान श्री कृष्ण युधिष्ठिर से कहते हैं कि जो भी व्यक्ति इस एकादशी व्रत की कथा को पढ़ते, या सुनते हैं उन्हें अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है।

               एकादशी के दिन अधिक से अधिक भगवान की सुंदर लीलाओं का श्रवण करना चाहिए और अधिक से अधिक हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का जप करना चाहिए। भगवान को प्राप्त करने का ये सबसे सरल तरीका है।

Ekadashi fast is very dear to Lord Shri Krishna, the easiest way to get God is to observe Ekadashi fast regularly.  The ardent devotees of the Lord observe this fast not only to get its fruits, but also to get the devotion of Lord Shri Krishna.

The glory of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month comes in Skanda Purana.  Once Yudhishthira Maharaj asked Lord Shri Krishna that O Vasudev I long to hear the glory of Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Falgun month, please tell me in detail.

Then Lord Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira that the person who observes the fast of this Vijaya Ekadashi, he definitely gets victory in this life as well as in the next life.

This auspicious Ekadashi destroys all kinds of sins, old and new.  This Ekadashi is so powerful that all the sins of the person who just listens to it are destroyed.

Lord Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira that once Narad Muni asked Brahma ji a question that O best of the gods, you tell me what benefits those who observe this Ekadashi fast with devotion get.

Then in reply Brahma ji said to Narad ji that O Narad, till date I have not told anyone the method of this Ekadashi, the biggest fruit of this Ekadashi is known only by its name.

Vijaya Ekadashi means which gives victory to all human beings.  Its story is something like this, that in Treta Yug, when Lord Shri Ram ji was exiled for fourteen years, then Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman all these three started living like beggars in Panchavati.

When the evil Ravana kidnapped Mother Sita, then Lord Shri Ram and Lakshman ji went out in search of Mother Sita very distraught.  When he found Jatayu in an injured state on the way, he narrated the story of Mother Sita to Shri Ram.

Going a little further, he befriended Sugriva, and Lord Shri Ram killed Bali.  Hanuman ji went to Lanka and found Sita Mata, and after coming back after burning Lanka, he told everything to Lord Shri Ram.

By taking a decision with Sugriva, Shri Ram made sure to go to Lanka.  After reaching the beach, he consulted Lakshmana how to cross this fierce sea.

Then Lakshman ji tells Shri Ram ji that O Raghunandan, a very great sage named Vaktalavya lives in this island since ancient times.  We should visit him and ask him how we will be able to reach our goal.

In this way, everyone went to Vaktalavya Muni's ashram and bowed down to him, surprised at this, Vaktalavya Muni raised his hand and asked Lord Shri Ram, O Lord, what is the purpose of your coming here.

Then Lord Shri Ram says to Vaktalavya Muni that O Brahmin Shrestha I have reached the sea shore and I have a huge army with me, we have to cross the sea, and kill Ravana, and win over Ravana.  Please tell us some way to cross the ocean.

Vaktalavya Muni tells Lord Shri Ram in the answer, that by observing the best fast on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month, you will definitely get victory, as well as you will definitely cross this ocean.

Muni said that the method of this fast is to make a pot of gold, silver, copper or clay on Dashami, fill it with water and decorate it with five mango leaves and establish it.

Place seven grains under this urn, and place a coconut and barley on top of it.  Establish the idol of Lord Narayan on this Kalash.  On the day of Ekadashi, after taking bath etc. in the morning, worship this Kalash with scent, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya etc.

After this, on the day of Ekadashi, sit near this Kalash and chant the holy names of God, and keep awake the whole night and chant the name of Hari.  On Dwadashi Tithi, take that Kalash to the bank of a river or pond and worship that Kalash duly, and then donate that Kalash to a worthy Brahmin.

Muni said that O Lord, if you observe this Ekadashi fast with your entire army, then your victory will be certain.  Lord Shri Ram followed this fast as told by the sage, and then he got victory.

In this way Lord Shri Ram showed the importance of Ekadashi to the entire human society.  Lord Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira that whoever reads or listens to the story of this Ekadashi fast gets the result of performing Ashwamedha Yagya.

On the day of Ekadashi, one should listen to the beautiful pastimes of the Lord as much as possible and chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra as much as possible.  This is the easiest way to attain God.
