सफला एकादशी व्रत कथा

एक बार महाराज युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण से पूछा कि हे श्री हरि पौष कृष्ण एकादशी का क्या नाम है, उस दिन कौन से देवता की पूजा की जाती है और उसकी विधि क्या है कृपया आप मुझे विस्तार पूर्वक कहिए।

                  यह सुनकर भगवान श्री कृष्ण कहने लगे कि हे राजन मैं तुम्हारे स्नेह के कारण तुमसे कहता हूं, कि एकादशी व्रत के अतिरिक्त अधिक से अधिक दक्षिणा पाने वाले यज्ञ से भी  मैं प्रसन्न नहीं होता हूं।

                   अतः एकादशी व्रत को अत्यंत भक्ति भाव से और श्रद्धा पूर्वक करना चाहिए। इस एकादशी का नाम सफला एकादशी है। इस एकादशी के देवता श्री नारायण हैं। जिस प्रकार नागों में शेष नाग, पक्षियों में गरुड़, सब ग्रहों में चंद्रमा , यज्ञों में अश्वमेघ  यज्ञ और देवताओं में भगवान विष्णु श्रेष्ठ हैं, उसी प्रकार व्रतों में एकादशी का व्रत सर्वश्रेष्ठ है।

                    इस दिन मौसम के अनुसार अनुकूल फल, नारियल, आंवला, नींबू, अनार , नैवेद्य आदि सामग्री से श्री भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करने के बाद कीर्तन करते हुए रात्रि जागरण करना चाहिए। इस एकादशी के व्रत के समान यज्ञ, तीर्थ,दान तथा तप और कोई दूसरा व्रत नहीं है।

                 पांच हजार वर्ष तप करने से जो फल मिलता है उससे भी कई गुणा ज्यादा फल सफला एकादशी के व्रत को करने से मिलता है। भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि हे राजन अब आप इस एकादशी के व्रत के कथा को सुनिए।

                एक समय की बात है चंपावती नगरी में एक महिष्मान नाम का राजा राज्य करता था। उसके चार पुत्र थे, उन सबमें लुंभक नाम वाला बड़ा बेटा महा पापी था। वह पापी सदा ही पर स्त्री , वैश्या गमन तथा दूसरे बुरे कामों में अपने पिता का धन नष्ट किया करता था।

                वह सदैव ही, देवता, वैष्णव तथा ब्राह्मणों की निंदा किया करता था। जब राजा को अपने पुत्र के ऐसे कुकर्मों का पता चला तो उन्होंने उसे अपने राज्य से निकाल दिया। अब उसका पुत्र सोचने लगा कि मैं अब कहां जाऊं? क्या करूं? अंत में उसने चोरी करने का निर्णय लिया।

                 वह दिन में वन में रहता, तथा रात्रि को अपने पिता के नगर में आकर चोरी करता , तथा  प्रजा को तंग करता और उन्हें मारने का  दुष्कर्म करता।उसके इस अत्याचार से सारी नगरी भयभीत हो गई।

                वह वन में रह कर पशु आदि को मार कर खाने लगा। नागरिक और राज्य के कर्मचारी उसे पकड़ तो लेते, परंतु राजा के भय से उसे छोड़ देते। उस वन में पीपल का बहुत ही पुराना और विशाल एक पेड़ था, वहां के लोग उस वृक्ष की भगवान की तरह पूजा करते थे।

                उसी पीपल की वृक्ष के नीचे वह पापी लुंभक रहा करता था। इस वन को लोग देवताओं की क्रीड़ा स्थली भी मानते थे। कुछ समय पश्चात पौष कृष्ण दशमी के दिन वह वस्त्रहीन होने के कारण ,शीत के चलते वह सारी रात सो नहीं सका।

               उसके हाथ पैड़ अकड़ गए, सूर्योदय होते होते वह मूर्छित हो गया। दूसरे दिन एकादशी को दोपहर के समय सूर्य की गर्मी लगने के कारण उसकी मूर्छा दूर हुई। गिरता परता वह भोजन की तलाश में निकला, उसके हाथ पैड़ कांप रहे थे, अतः वह उस समय पशुओं को मारने में सक्षम नहीं था, इसलिए पेड़ों के नीचे गिरे हुए फलों को उठा कर वापस उसी पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे आ गया।

                 उस समय तक भगवान सूर्य देव अस्त हो गए थे । वृक्ष के नीचे फल को रख कर वह कहने लगा कि ,हे भगवन अब आपको ही अर्पण है ये फल, आप तृप्त हो जाइए। उस रात्रि को दुख के कारण उसे फिर नींद नहीं आई, अनजाने में उसके द्वारा किए गए उपवास और जागरण से भगवान अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।

                  इस व्रत से उसके सारे पाप नष्ट हो गए। उस समय आकाशवाणी हुई कि हे राजकुमार सफला एकादशी के प्रताप से तुम्हें राज्य और पुत्र प्राप्ति होगी । उस समय से उसका मन परिवर्तित हुआ, और वह भगवान श्री कृष्ण की भक्ति करने लगा।

              इस आकाशवाणी को सुनकर वह अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ, और दिव्य वस्त्र धारण करके भगवान आपकी जय , हे भगवान आपकी जय हो यह कह कर अपने पिता के पास गया। पिता ने प्रसन्न होकर उसे समस्त राज्य का भार सौंप दिया, और स्वयं वन की ओर प्रस्थान कर गए।

                अब लुंभक कुशल पूर्वक राज्य करने लगा।उसकी पत्नी, पुत्र और उसका सारा कुटुंब भगवान श्री कृष्ण के परम भक्त बन गए। वृद्ध होकर वह भी अपने पुत्र को अपने राज्य का भार सौंप कर वन में तपस्या करने चला गया, और अंत समय में वैकुंठ को प्राप्त हुआ।

                सफला एकादशी की कथा को पढ़ने से अथवा श्रवण करने से मनुष्य को अश्वमेघ यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है। इस दिन अधिक से अधिक भगवान के पवित्र नाम का जप हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे का जप और कीर्तन करें।

Once Maharaj Yudhishthira asked Lord Shri Krishna that what is the name of Shri Hari Paush Krishna Ekadashi, which deity is worshiped on that day and what is its method, please tell me in detail.

Hearing this, Lord Shri Krishna said, O king, because of your affection, I tell you that apart from the Ekadashi fast, I am not pleased even with the yagya that gets maximum Dakshina.

Therefore, Ekadashi fast should be observed with utmost devotion and devotion.  The name of this Ekadashi is Saphala Ekadashi.  The deity of this Ekadashi is Shri Narayan.  Just as Shesha Nag is the best among snakes, Garuda among birds, Moon among all planets, Ashvamedha Yajna among Yagyas and Lord Vishnu is the best among gods, in the same way Ekadashi fasting is the best among all fasts.

On this day, after worshiping Shri Lord Vishnu with suitable fruits, coconut, amla, lemon, pomegranate, naivedya etc. material according to the weather, one should do night vigil while doing kirtan.  Yagya, pilgrimage, charity and penance are like the fast of this Ekadashi and there is no other fast.

Fasting on Saphala Ekadashi gives many times more fruit than what you get by doing penance for five thousand years.  Lord Shri Krishna said that O Rajan, now you listen to the story of the fast of this Ekadashi.

Once upon a time, a king named Mahishman used to rule in the city of Champavati.  He had four sons, among them the eldest son named Lumbhak was a great sinner.  That sinner always used to destroy his father's wealth in women, prostitution and other bad deeds.

He always used to criticize deities, Vaishnavas and Brahmins.  When the king came to know about such misdeeds of his son, he expelled him from his kingdom.  Now his son started thinking that where should I go now?  what to do  At last he decided to steal.

  He lived in the forest during the day, and at night came to his father's city to steal, and harassed the people and committed the misdeed of killing them. The whole city was horrified by his atrocity.

He started living in the forest after killing animals etc.  Citizens and state employees would have caught him, but for fear of the king, they would have released him.  There was a very old and huge Peepal tree in that forest, the people there used to worship that tree like a god.

That sinner used to live under the same Peepal tree.  People also considered this forest as the playground of the gods.  After some time, on the day of Pausha Krishna Dashami, he could not sleep the whole night because of the cold, being without clothes.

His hands and legs became stiff, he fainted as the sun rose.  On the second day on Ekadashi, due to the heat of the sun in the afternoon, his unconsciousness went away.  Falling down he went out in search of food, his hands and feet were trembling, so he was not able to kill the animals at that time, so picked up the fallen fruits under the trees and came back under the same Peepal tree.

By that time Lord Surya Dev had set.  Keeping the fruit under the tree, he started saying, O God, now this fruit is an offering to you, be satisfied.  That night he could not sleep again due to grief, the Lord was extremely pleased with his fasting and vigil unknowingly.        

All his sins were destroyed by this fast.  At that time, there was a voice in the sky that O prince, you will get a kingdom and a son from the glory of Safla Ekadashi.  From that time his mind changed, and he started worshiping Lord Shri Krishna.

He was extremely pleased to hear this Akashvani, and dressed in divine clothes, went to his father saying, God bless you, God bless you.  The father was pleased and handed over the burden of the entire state to him, and himself left for the forest.

Now Lumbhak started ruling efficiently. His wife, son and his entire family became supreme devotees of Lord Shri Krishna.  After getting old, he also handed over the burden of his kingdom to his son and went to the forest to do penance, and in the end he attained Vaikunth.

By reading or listening to the story of Safla Ekadashi, a person gets the result of performing Ashwamedha Yagya.  Chant and chant the holy name of the Lord more and more on this day Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.
