पुत्रदा एकादशी व्रत कथा

भविष्योत्तर पुराण में महाराज युधिष्ठिर तथा भगवान श्री कृष्ण के संवाद में पुत्रदा एकादशी के महात्म्य का वर्णन मिलता है।

              एक बार महाराज युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण से पूछा कि हे भगवन आप कृपा करके मुझे पौष मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी के विषय में बताईए। इस व्रत की विधि क्या है, और इस दिन कौन से देवता की पूजा की जाती है।

               तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि जगत कल्याण हेतु मैं इस एकादशी का वर्णन करूंगा। इसे पुत्रदा एकादशी कहते हैं, और सब पापों का नाश करने वाली यह सर्वोत्तम तिथी है।

                कामना तथा सिद्धी को पूर्ण करने वाले भगवान इस तिथी के देवता हैं। पूरे त्रिलोक में यह सबसे उत्तम तिथी है। अब इसकी कथा ध्यान पूर्वक सुनो। प्राचीन काल में भद्रावती नगरी में  सुकेतुमान नामक एक राजा राज्य करता था।

               राजा की कोई संतान नहीं थी। उसकी पत्नी का नाम शैव्या था। उस पुत्रहीन राजा को बहुत चिंता थी कि उसके बाद उसे और उसके पूर्वजों को कौन पिंडदान देगा।

                 उसके पित्र भी व्यथित हो पिण्ड लेते थे,कि सुकेतुमान के बाद कौन उन्हें पिण्ड देगा। राजा भी बंधु, बांधव, राज्य, घोड़ा, हाथी आदि से संतुष्ट नहीं था, जिसका एकमात्र कारण उसका पुत्रहीन होना था।

               इस तरह राजा रात दिन चिंता में रहा करता था, इस चिंता के कारण राजा एक दिन इतना दुखी हो गया कि उसके मन में अपने शरीर को त्याग देने की इक्षा हुई।

               किंतु वह सोचने लगा कि आत्महत्या करना तो महा पाप है,अतः उसने इस विचार को मन से निकाल दिया। एक दिन इन्ही विचारों में डूबा हुआ वह घोड़े पर सवार होकर वन की ओर चल दिया।

                घोड़े पर सवार राजा वन, पक्षियों और वृक्षों को देखने लगा। उसने वन में देखा कि बाघ, मृग, सिंह, बंदर आदि वन में विचरण कर रहे हैं। हाथी अपने शिशुओं और हथनियों के बीच में विचर रहा है ।

             उस वन में राजा ने देखा कि कहीं तो सियार कर्कश ध्वनि निकाल रहा है, और कहीं मोर अपने अपने परिवार के साथ नाच रहे हैं। वन के इन दृष्यों को देखकर राजा और भी ज्यादा दुखी हो गया, कि उसके पुत्र क्यों नहीं हैं।

                इसी सोच विचार में दोपहर हो गई, वह सोचने लगा कि मैंने अनेक यज्ञ किए हैं, ब्राह्मणों की इतनी सेवा की है,किंतु फिर भी मुझे इतना दुख क्यों मिल रहा है। आखिर इसका कारण क्या है, अपनी व्यथा मैं किससे जाकर कहूं, और कौन है जो मेरे दुख का निवारण कर सकता है।

                अपने विचारों में खोए हुए राजा को प्यास लगी, वह पानी की तलाश में आगे बढ़ा। कुछ दूर जाने पर उसे एक सरोवर मिला, उस सरोवर में कमल के फूल खिले हुए थे। सारस, हंस, घड़ियाल आदि जल क्रीड़ा में मग्न थे।

               सरोवर के चारों तरफ ऋषियों के आश्रम बने हुए थे। अचानक राजा के दाहिने अंग फड़कने लगे। इसे शुभ शगुण मान कर मन में प्रसन्न होते हुए राजा घोड़े से नीचे उतरा, और सरोवर के सामने बैठे हुए ऋषियों को प्रणाम करके उनके पास बैठ गया।

                ऋषियों ने प्रसन्न होकर राजा से कहा कि, हम आपसे अति प्रसन्न हैं, आपकी जो भी ईक्षा है आप हमसे मांग लो। इस पर राजा ने पूछा कि हे संतों आप कौन हैं और किसलिए यहां रह रहे हैं।

                 ऋषि बोले कि हे राजन आज पुत्र की इक्षा रखने वाले को श्रेष्ठ पुत्र प्रदान करने वाली पुत्रदा एकादशी है, आज से पांच दिन बाद माघ स्नान है, और हम सब इस सरोवर में स्नान करने आए हैं।

                  ऋषियों की बात सुन कर राजा ने कहा कि हे मुनिवर मेरा भी कोई पुत्र नहीं है, यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं तो  कृपा कर मुझे  एक पुत्र प्राप्ति का वरदान दीजिए।

                    ऋषि बोले कि हे राजन आज पुत्रदा एकादशी है, आप इसका उपवास करें। भगवान श्री हरि की कृपा से आपके घर अवश्य ही पुत्र होगा। राजा ने मुनि के कहे अनुसार उस दिन एकादशी का उपवास किया, और द्वादशी को व्रत का पारण किया, और ऋषियों को प्रणाम करके अपने नगर वापस आ गया।

                    भगवान श्री हरि की कृपा से उस व्रत के प्रभाव से कुछ दिनों बाद ही उसकी रानी गर्भवती हुई और राजा के घर एक तेजस्वी पुत्र का जन्म हुआ।

                   यह राजकुमार बड़ा होकर बहुत ही धनवान, वीर , यशस्वी, और प्रजा का पालक बना, इसलिए हे राजन पुत्रदा एकादशी का व्रत सभी को अवश्य करना चाहिए। जो कोई भी इस व्रत को करता है उसे पुत्र की प्राप्ति होकर वह मनुष्य स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति करता है।

                   जो कोई भी मनुष्य इस व्रत की महिमा को पढ़ता, कहता या सुनता है,उसे अश्वमेघ यज्ञ के फल की प्राप्ति होती है। इस व्रत को श्रद्धा पूर्वक करने से भगवान श्री विष्णु अत्यंत प्रसन्न होते हैं, और उनके प्रसन्न होने से हमें सभी प्रकार की सुख, समृद्धि और भगवान की भक्ति की प्राप्ति होती है।

                   इस दिन अधिक से अधिक भगवान के पवित्र नाम का कीर्तन और उनकी लीलाओं का श्रवण करना चाहिए, और अधिक से अधिक हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का जप करना चाहिए।

      The greatness of Putrada Ekadashi is described in the dialogue between Maharaj Yudhishthira and Lord Shri Krishna in Bhavishyottara Purana.

Once Maharaj Yudhishthir asked Lord Shri Krishna that O God, please tell me about the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of the month of Pausha.  What is the method of this fast, and which deity is worshiped on this day.

Then Lord Shri Krishna said that I will describe this Ekadashi for the welfare of the world.  This is called Putrada Ekadashi, and it is the best date to destroy all sins.

The God who fulfills wishes and accomplishments is the deity of this date.  This is the best date in the entire Trilok.  Now listen to its story carefully.  In ancient times, a king named Suketuman used to rule in Bhadravati city.

The king had no children.  His wife's name was Shaivya.  That sonless king was very worried that after that who would give pinddaan to him and his ancestors.

His ancestors also used to take Pind in distress, that after Suketuman, who would give them Pind.  The king was also not satisfied with the brothers, relatives, kingdom, horse, elephant etc., the only reason being that he was childless.        

In this way, the king used to live in worry day and night, due to this worry, the king became so sad one day that he wanted to give up his body.

But he started thinking that committing suicide is a great sin, so he removed this thought from his mind.  One day immersed in these thoughts, he went towards the forest by riding a horse.

The king riding on the horse started looking at the forest, birds and trees.  He saw in the forest that tigers, deer, lions, monkeys etc. were roaming in the forest.  The elephant is wandering among its babies and elephants.

In that forest, the king saw that somewhere the jackal was making a hoarse sound, and somewhere the peacocks were dancing with their families.  The king became even more sad after seeing these scenes of the forest, why he does not have sons.

It was noon in this thinking, he started thinking that I have performed many yagyas, served the Brahmins so much, but still why am I getting so much pain.  After all, what is the reason for this, to whom do I go and tell my sorrows, and who else can solve my sorrows.

Lost in his thoughts, the king felt thirsty and went ahead in search of water.  After going some distance, he found a lake, lotus flowers were blooming in that lake.  Storks, swans, crocodiles etc. were engrossed in water sports.

Rishis' ashrams were built around the lake.  Suddenly the king's right digits started fluttering.  Taking this as auspicious omen, the king got down from the horse, and after saluting the sages sitting in front of the lake, sat down beside them.

The sages were pleased and said to the king that, we are very pleased with you, whatever you wish, ask from us.  On this the king asked, O saints, who are you and why are you staying here.

The sage said that O Rajan, today is Putrada Ekadashi, which gives the best son to the one who is looking for a son, Magh bath is five days from today, and we all have come to bathe in this lake.

After listening to the sages, the king said that O Munivar, I also do not have a son, if you are happy with me, then please give me the boon of having a son.

Rishi said that O Rajan, today is Putrada Ekadashi, you should fast on it.  By the grace of Lord Shri Hari, you will definitely have a son.  The king fasted on Ekadashi that day as per the sage's saying, and on Dwadashi, the fast was completed, and after saluting the sages, he returned to his city.

A few days after that fast, by the grace of Lord Sri Hari, his queen became pregnant and a bright son was born to the king.

This prince grew up to be very rich, brave, successful, and the protector of the people, so O Rajan, everyone must fast on Putrada Ekadashi.  Whoever observes this fast gets a son and attains heaven.

Whoever recites, recites or listens to the glory of this fast, he gets the fruits of Ashwamedha Yagya.  By observing this fast with devotion, Lord Shri Vishnu is very pleased, and by being pleased with him, we get all kinds of happiness, prosperity and devotion to God.

On this day one should chant the holy name of the Lord more and more and listen to His pastimes, and chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra more and more.
