पद्मिनी एकादशी व्रत कथा

एक बार युधिष्ठिर महाराज ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण से पूछा कि हे भगवन अधिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष में आने वाली एकादशी का नाम क्या है, और इस एकादशी का पालन कैसे करना चाहिए, तथा इससे प्राप्त होने वाले फल का कृप्या आप विस्तार से वर्णन करें।

                   तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि हे राजन इस पवित्र एकादशी का नाम पद्मिनी है, जो मुनष्य इस व्रत का पालन करता है, उसे पद्मनाभ भगवान के धाम की प्राप्ति होती है।

               इसके पालन से सभी पापों का नाश होता है, यहां तक कि चार मुख वाले ब्रम्हा जी भी इस एकादशी की महिमा कहने में असमर्थ हैं। हे राजन दशमी के दिन से ही इस व्रत का पालन करना चाहिए।

               दूसरों के द्वारा बनाया गया अन्न इसमें वर्जित है। कांसे के बरतन में पकाया हुआ अन्न भी नहीं खाना चाहिए।उबले हुए चावल और घी भी नहीं लेना चाहिए। धरती पर चटाई बिछाकर सोना चाहिए, और ब्रम्हचर्य का पूर्ण रूप से पालन करना चाहिए।

               एकादशी के दिन प्रातः काल में उठ कर स्नान करना चाहिए , और भगवान को धूप, दीप , चंदन, कपूर और जल अर्पण करना चाहिए। भगवान के पवित्र नाम का जप करना चाहिए, और किसी भी प्रकार की प्रजल्प अर्थात व्यर्थ की बातें नहीं करनी चाहिए।

                 रात भर जागरण करके भगवान के नाम, रूप और गुण का वर्णन करना चाहिए।  इस एकादशी में रात्रि के पहले प्रहर तक जागरण करने से अगग्निष्टोम यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है, दूसरे प्रहर तक जागरण करने से वाजपेय यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है , रात्रि के तीसरे प्रहर तक जागरण करने से अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है, और पूरी रात जागरण करने से राजसूय यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है।

                 द्वादशी के दिन ब्राम्हणों अथवा वैष्णवों को अन्न दान करके व्रत पूर्ण करना चाहिए। इस प्रकार से व्रत का पालन करने वालों को मुक्ति की प्राप्ति होती है। तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि हे राजन मैंने आपके जिज्ञासानुसार इस व्रत का विधि माहात्म्य बताया ।

               अब बहुत पहले पुलस्त्य ऋषि द्वारा नारद मुनि को बताई गई सुंदर कथा सुनो। एक बार कृतवीर्य अर्जुन ने रावण को पकड़ कर बंदी बनाया, यह देख कर पुलस्त्य ऋषि कृतवीर्य अर्जुन के पास जाकर रावण को छुराकर लाए।

              यह सुनकर नारद मुनि ने पुलस्त्य ऋषि को प्रणाम करके अत्यंत विनम्रता के साथ पूछा, कि हे मुनीवर जिस रावण ने सभी देवताओं को पराजित किया, फिर ऐसे बलवान रावण को कृतवीर्य अर्जुन ने कैसे बंदी बनाया , कृप्या आप इस बारे में मुझे विस्तार पूर्वक बताएं।

               तब पुलस्त्य ऋषि ने नारद मुनि को बताया कि, हे नारद त्रेता युग में हैहय कुल में जन्मा हुआ  कृतवीर्य नाम का एक राजा था। महिष्मतिपुरी उसकी राजधानी थी, और उसकी एक हजार रानियां थी। परंतु उसके राज्य को ठीक प्रकार से संभाले ऐसा एक भी पुत्र उसके पास नहीं था।

                राजा ने सभी व्रतों का पालन किया था, और साधु संतों की सेवा की थी, फिर भी उसे पुत्र की प्राप्ति  नहीं हुई। अपनी राज्य की सारी जिम्मेदारी तब वो अपने प्रधान मंत्री को सौंप कर तपस्या करने वन में चला गया।

               राजभवन छोड़ते समय उनकी रानी पद्मिनी ने उन्हें देखा, जो इक्ष्वाकु वंश के राजा हरिश्चंद्र की पुत्री थी। अपने पति को जाता हुआ देख कर उसने अपने गहनों को त्याग दिया, और अपने पति के साथ मंदार पर्वत पर चली गई।

              कृतवीर्य और उसकी पत्नी ने मंदार पर्वत के शिखर पर दस सहस्त्र वर्ष तक तपस्या की, अपने पति के क्षीण होते हुए शरीर को देख कर एक दिन पद्मिनी ने सती अनुसूया से पूछा कि हे पतिव्रते दस सहस्त्र वर्ष तक तपस्या करने पर भी भगवान केशव मेरे पति से प्रसन्न नहीं हुए, कृप्या आप मुझे कोई एक ऐसा व्रत बताएं, जिससे कि भगवान श्री कृष्ण प्रसन्न होकर मुझे एक ऐसा पुत्र दें, जो एक पराक्रमी राजा बने।

                तब महारानी पद्मिनी की बातों से सती अनुसूया अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुई, और कहा कि हर बत्तीस महीने के पश्चात अधिक मास आता है। इस मास में दो एकादशी आती है पद्मिनी और परमा। इन एकादशियों के व्रत के पालन से भगवान तुरंत प्रसन्न हो जाएंगे, और तुम्हारी सभी इक्षाएं पूरी हो जाएंगी।

               तब माता अनुसूया के कहे अनुसार महारानी पद्मिनी ने इस व्रत को नियम पूर्वक किया, और तब भगवान केशव गरूड़ पर बैठ कर वहां आए, और पद्मिनी को वर मांगने को कहा। पहले तो रानी ने भगवान को वंदन किया, और फिर प्रार्थना करने लगी, उसके बाद उन्होंने पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए भगवान से विनती की।

                तब भगवान ने कहा कि हे साध्वी मैं तुम पर बहुत प्रसन्न हूं। भगवान ने कहा कि अधिक मास जितना प्रिय मुझे कोई भी अन्य मास प्रिय नहीं है, और अधिक मास की एकादशी भी मुझे अत्यंत प्रिय है। तुमने मुझे प्रसन्न किया है, और इसीलिए निश्चित ही तुम्हारे पति की ईक्षा मैं पूर्ण करूंगा।

              पद्मिनी से बात करने के पश्चात भगवान कृतवीर्य के पास आए, और कहा कि तुम्हारी पत्नी ने एकादशी का व्रत विधि पूर्वक किया है, जिससे मैं अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूं, इसलिए तुम्हारी जो भी इक्षा हो तुम मांगो। तब राजा ने प्रसन्न होकर हमेशा विजय प्राप्त करने वाले एक बलवान पुत्र का वरदान मांगा।

             राजा ने कहा कि हे मधुसूदन, देवता, मुनष्य, नाग और राक्षस इनसे कभी न पराजित होने वाला पुत्र आप मुझे दीजिए, और तब इस वरदान को देकर भगवान वहां से अन्तर्ध्यान हो गए। राजा और रानी भी अपने राज्य को वापस लौट आए। थोड़े ही समय बाद रानी पद्मिनी ने एक अत्यंत पराक्रमी पुत्र को जन्म दिया,जो कृतवीर्य अर्जुन के नाम से विख्यात हुआ।

               उसके जैसा पराक्रमी राजा दूसरा कोई नहीं था, दसमुखी रावण को भी उसने पराजित किया था। इस सुंदर कथा को कहकर पुलस्त्य ऋषि ने वहां से प्रस्थान किया । भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने आगे कहा कि हे राजन इस प्रकार मैंने आपको अधिक मास में आने वाली पद्मिनी एकादशी का माहात्म्य कहा, और जो कोई भी इसका पालन करता है, उसे निश्चित ही वैकुंठ की प्राप्ति होती है।

               एकादशी के दिन अधिक से अधिक भगवान के पवित्र नाम का श्रवण, कीर्तन करना चाहिए।भगवद्गीता और भागवतम का पठन करना चाहिए, और हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का कम से कम सोलह अथवा पच्चीस माला का जप करना चाहिए।

Once Yudhishthir Maharaj asked Lord Shri Krishna, O Lord, what is the name of the Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Adhik month, and how should this Ekadashi be observed, and please describe in detail the results obtained from it.

Then Lord Shri Krishna said that O king, the name of this holy Ekadashi is Padmini, the person who observes this fast, he attains the abode of Lord Padmanabha.

All sins are destroyed by its observance, even Brahma with four faces is unable to say the glory of this Ekadashi.  Hey Rajan, this fast should be observed from the day of Dashami itself.

Food made by others is prohibited in this.  Food cooked in a bronze vessel should not be eaten. Boiled rice and ghee should also not be taken.  One should sleep by spreading a mat on the ground, and celibacy should be followed completely.

On the day of Ekadashi, one should wake up early in the morning and take a bath, and offer incense, lamp, sandalwood, camphor and water to God.  One should chant the holy name of God, and should not do any kind of Prajalp i.e. useless talk.

The name, form and qualities of God should be described by staying awake all night.  In this Ekadashi, by staying awake till the first hour of the night, one gets the result of performing Aggnisthoma Yagya, by waking up till the second time, one gets the result of performing Vajpayya Yagya, by staying awake till the third hour of the night, one gets the result of performing Ashwamedha Yagya.  And by keeping awake the whole night one gets the result of performing Rajasuya Yagya.

On the day of Dwadashi, the fast should be completed by donating food to Brahmins or Vaishnavas.  In this way, those who observe the fast attain liberation.  Then Lord Shri Krishna said that O King, according to your curiosity, I told the greatness of this fast.

Now listen to the beautiful story told by sage Pulastya to Narada Muni long ago.  Once Kritavirya Arjun caught Ravana and made him a prisoner, seeing this, sage Pulastya went to Kritavirya Arjuna and brought Ravana by stabbing him.

Hearing this, Narada Muni bowed down to Pulastya Rishi and asked with utmost humility, O Munivar, who defeated all the gods, then how did Kritavirya Arjuna capture such a strong Ravana, please tell me in detail about this.

Then Pulastya Rishi told Narad Muni that, O Narad, there was a king named Kritavirya born in Haihay clan in Treta Yuga.  Mahishmatipuri was his capital, and he had a thousand queens.  But he did not have a single son to handle his kingdom properly.

The king had observed all the vows, and served the sages and saints, yet he did not beget a son.  Then he handed over all the responsibility of his state to his Prime Minister and went to the forest to do penance.

While leaving the palace, he was seen by his queen Padmini, who was the daughter of King Harishchandra of the Ikshvaku dynasty.  Seeing her husband leaving, she gave up her ornaments, and went with her husband to Mount Mandar.

Kritavirya and his wife did penance for ten thousand years on the peak of Mandar mountain, seeing her husband's emaciated body, one day Padmini asked Sati Anusuya that even after doing penance for ten thousand years, Lord Keshav is my husband.  Please tell me such a fast, so that Lord Shri Krishna will be pleased and give me such a son, who will become a mighty king.

Then Sati Anusuya was very pleased with the words of Queen Padmini, and said that after every thirty-two months Adhik Maas comes.  There are two Ekadashis in this month, Padmini and Parma.  By observing the fast of these Ekadashis, God will be immediately pleased, and all your wishes will be fulfilled.

Then according to Mata Anusuya's advice, Queen Padmini performed this fast as per rules, and then Lord Keshav came there sitting on Garuda, and asked Padmini to ask for a groom.  First the queen worshiped God, and then started praying, after that she requested God to have a son.

Then God said that O Sadhvi, I am very pleased with you.  God said that no other month is as dear to me as Adhik Maas, and Ekadashi of Adhik Maas is also very dear to me.  You have pleased me, and that is why I will definitely fulfill your husband's wish.

After talking to Padmini, God came to Kritavirya, and said that your wife has observed Ekadashi fast, which makes me very happy, so ask for whatever you wish.  Then the king was pleased and asked for the boon of a strong son who always wins.

The king said that O Madhusudan, give me a son who will never be defeated by gods, humans, snakes and demons, and then God disappeared from there after giving this boon.  The king and queen also returned to their kingdom.  Shortly afterwards, Queen Padmini gave birth to a very mighty son, who became famous as Kritavirya Arjuna.

There was no other mighty king like him, he had also defeated ten faced Ravana.  Sage Pulastya left there after telling this beautiful story.  Lord Shri Krishna further said that O King, in this way I told you the greatness of Padmini Ekadashi coming in the month of Adhikam, and whoever observes it, he definitely gets Vaikuntha.

On the day of Ekadashi, one should chant and listen to the holy name of the Lord as much as possible. One should read the Bhagavadgita and the Bhagavatam, and chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra for at least sixteen or twenty-five rounds.

कामिका एकादशी व्रत कथा

ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण में युधिष्ठिर महाराज और भगवान श्री कृष्ण के संवाद में कामिका एकादशी का माहात्म्य वर्णित है। युधिष्ठिर महाराज ने कहा कि हे भगवन,आपसे मैंने देवशयनी एकादशी के बारे में सुना, कृप्या आप मुझे श्रावण मास के कृष्ण पक्ष में आने वाली एकादशी के बारे में बताएं।

                  तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि हे राजन सावन के कृष्ण पक्ष में आने वाली एकादशी, सभी पापों का नाश करने वाली और मनोवांछित फलों को देने वाली कामिका एकादशी का शुभ आगमन होता है।

                पुरातन काल में ब्रम्हा जी से नारद जी ने पूछा कि सावन के कृष्ण पक्ष में किस एकादशी का आगमन होता है और उसका नाम क्या है। इस व्रत के प्रधान देव कौन हैं, तथा इस व्रत को करने से कौन से पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है।

               तब ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा कि, हे नारद आपने समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड के हित का प्रश्न पूछा है। इस एकादशी को कामिका एकादशी कहा जाता है। इसको करने से वाजपेय यज्ञ को करने का फल प्राप्त होता है।

                इस तिथि को संख, चक्र , गदा और पद्म धारण करने वाले भगवान श्री विष्णु की पूजा करनी चाहिए। इस दिन भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करने से पवित्र तीर्थ स्नान, जैसे कि गंगा, काशी,नैमिशारण्य और पुष्कर जैसे स्थानों पर स्नान करने वाले पुण्य  से भी हजारों गुणा अधिक पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है।

              व्रत के फलस्वरुप भगवान विष्णु की पूजा से उपासकों के साथ साथ उनके पित्रों के भी सारे कष्ट दूर हो जाते हैं। उपासकों को मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है।

               श्रावण मास में भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करने से सभी गंधर्वों और नागों की भी पूजा हो जाती है। जिस प्रकार कमल को पानी स्पर्ष नहीं कर सकता, उसी प्रकार कामिका एकादशी करने वाले को पाप स्पर्ष नहीं कर सकता है।

             जो कोई भी तुलसी पत्र से भगवान श्री हरि की पूजा करता है, वह सभी पापों से मुक्त हो जाता है। तुलसी के केवल दर्शन मात्र से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

              तुलसी माता को स्पर्ष करने से हम पावन हो जाते हैं, उनकी प्रार्थना करने से व्यक्ति रोगमुक्त हो जाता है, और तुलसी रोपण करने से भगवान श्री कृष्ण के साथ रहने का सौभाग्य प्राप्त होता है। उनके चरण कमलों पर तुलसी अर्पण करने से भक्ति की प्राप्ति होती है।

                एकादशी के दिन तुलसी महारानी को घी का दीपक और प्रणाम करने से, उससे प्राप्त होने वाले फल का हिसाब रखने में स्वयं चित्रगुप्त भी असमर्थ हैं।

                कामिका एकादशी व्रत करने से भ्रूण हत्या, तथा ब्रम्ह हत्या जैसे महापापों से भी मुक्ति मिलती है। एकादशी के दिन भगवान श्री कृष्ण के सम्मुख जिसका दीपक जलता है, उसके पित्र स्वर्गलोक में स्थित होकर अमृतपान से तृप्त होते हैं।

                भगवान के समक्ष घी अथवा तिल के तेल से दीपक जलाकर मनुष्य देह त्याग के पश्चात, करोड़ों दीपकों से पूजित होकर स्वर्गलोक में निवास करता है। इसलिए हे नारद पाप से भयभीत मनुष्यों को इस कामिका एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए।

             एकादशी व्रत से बढ़कर पापों के नाश का और कोई उपाय नहीं है। स्वयं भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने भी कहा है कि कामिका एकादशी को करने से मुनष्य फिर कभी भी किसी भी योनि में जन्म नहीं लेता।

            जो इस एकादशी पर श्रद्धा और भक्ति से भगवान विष्णु को तुलसी पत्र अर्पण करते हैं, वे समस्त पापों से मुक्त हो जाते हैं। ब्रम्हा जी ने कहा कि हे नारद, मैं स्वयं श्री हरि की प्रिय तुलसी को सदैव नमस्कार करता हूं।

            इस एकादशी के माहात्म्य को जो भी श्रद्धा पूर्वक श्रवण और पठन करता है उसे भी वैकुंठ लोक की प्राप्ति होती है। भगवान श्री हरि सर्वोपरि हैं, वे अपने भक्तों की निश्चल भक्ति से सहज ही प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं।

              तुलसी जी भगवान श्री विष्णु की प्रिया हैं, भगवान श्री हरि सोने, चांदी हीरे, मोती से इतने प्रसन्न नहीं होते, जितनी प्रसन्नता उन्हें तुलसी दल के अर्पण करने से होती है।अतः एकादशी पर हमें भी व्रत रख कर भगवान को प्रसन्न करना चाहिए, और भगवान को तुलसी अर्पित कर सभी पापों से मुक्त होकर भक्ति के पथ पर आगे बढ़ना चाहिए।

            एकादशी के दिन अधिक से अधिक भगवान की सुंदर लीलाओं का श्रवण करना चाहिए, और भगवान के पवित्र नाम का कीर्तन करना चाहिए। सभी को भगवद्गीता और भागवतम् का पठन करना चाहिए, और हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का अधिक से अधिक जप करना चाहिए।

  The greatness of Kamika Ekadashi is described in Brahmavaivarta Purana in the dialogue between Yudhishthira Maharaj and Lord Shri Krishna.  Yudhishthir Maharaj said that O Lord, I heard from you about Devshayani Ekadashi, please tell me about the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Shravan.

Then Lord Shri Krishna said that O Rajan, the Ekadashi coming in the Krishna Paksha of Sawan, the auspicious arrival of Kamika Ekadashi, which destroys all sins and gives the desired fruits.

In ancient times, Narad ji asked Brahma ji that which Ekadashi comes in the Krishna Paksha of Sawan and what is its name.  Who is the presiding deity of this fast, and what virtues are achieved by observing this fast.

Then Brahma ji said that, O Narad, you have asked the question of the interest of the whole universe.  This Ekadashi is called Kamika Ekadashi.  By doing this one gets the result of performing Vajpayee Yagya.

On this date, Lord Shri Vishnu should be worshipped, who wears Sankh, Chakra, Gada and Padma.  Worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day yields thousands of times more merit than the merit of taking a holy pilgrimage bath at holy places such as the Ganges, Kashi, Naimisharanya and Pushkar.

As a result of the fast, worshiping Lord Vishnu removes all the sufferings of the worshipers as well as their ancestors.  Worshipers get salvation.

By worshiping Lord Vishnu in the month of Shravan, all Gandharvas and serpents are also worshipped.  Just as water cannot touch a lotus, in the same way sin cannot touch the person who performs Kamika Ekadashi.

Whoever worships Lord Sri Hari with Tulsi leaves, he becomes free from all sins.  All sins are destroyed by just seeing Tulsi.

By touching Tulsi Mata we become pure, by praying to her one becomes free from diseases, and by planting Tulsi we get the good fortune of living with Lord Shri Krishna.  By offering Tulsi at his lotus feet one attains devotion.

Even Chitragupt himself is unable to keep account of the results obtained by offering ghee lamp and salutations to Tulsi Maharani on the day of Ekadashi.

By observing Kamika Ekadashi fast, one gets freedom from great sins like infanticide and brahma murder.  Whose lamp is lit in front of Lord Shri Krishna on the day of Ekadashi, his ancestors are situated in heaven and are satisfied by drinking nectar.

By lighting a lamp with ghee or sesame oil in front of God, after leaving the human body, worshiped by crores of lamps, resides in heaven.  That's why O Narad, people who are afraid of sin must fast on this Kamika Ekadashi.

There is no better way to destroy sins than fasting on Ekadashi.  Lord Shri Krishna himself has also said that by observing Kamika Ekadashi, man never takes birth again in any form.

Those who offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu with devotion and devotion on this Ekadashi, they are freed from all sins.  Brahma ji said that O Narad, I myself always bow down to Shri Hari's beloved Tulsi.

Whoever listens and recites the greatness of this Ekadashi with devotion, he also gets Vaikunth Lok.  Lord Shri Hari is supreme, He is easily pleased by the unflinching devotion of His devotees.

Tulsi ji is the beloved of Lord Shri Vishnu, Lord Shri Hari is not so pleased with gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, as much as he is pleased with the offering of Tulsi Dal. Therefore, we should keep fast on Ekadashi and please God  And by offering Tulsi to God, one should move forward on the path of devotion by getting free from all sins.

On the day of Ekadashi one should listen more and more to the beautiful pastimes of the Lord, and chant the holy name of the Lord.  One should read the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavatam, and chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra more and more.

भगवद्गीता के अध्याय 18 से लिया गया श्लोक संख्या 26

मुक्तसंगोऽनहंवादी धृत्युत्साहसमन्वित: ।

सिद्धयसिद्धयोर्निर्विकार: कर्ता सात्त्विक उच्यते।।26।।

जो व्यक्ति भौतिक गुणों के संसर्ग के बिना अहंकार रहित, संकल्प तथा उत्साहपूर्वक अपना कर्म करता है और सफलता अथवा असफलता में अविचलित रहता है,वह सात्त्विक कर्ता कहलाता है।

तात्पर्य : कृष्णभावनामय व्यक्ति सदैव प्रकृति के गुणों से अतीत होता है। उसे अपने सौंपे गए कर्म के परिणाम की कोई आकांक्षा नहीं रहती है, क्योंकि वह मिथ्या, अहंकार तथा घमंड से परे होता है।

               फिर भी अपने कार्य के पूर्ण होने तक वह हमेशा उत्साह से पूर्ण रहता है। उसे होने वाले कष्टों की कोई चिंता नहीं होती, वह सदैव उत्साहपूर्ण रहता है। वह सफलता या विफलता की परवाह नहीं करता, तथा वह सुख दुख में एक समान अर्थात समभाव रहता है।

ऐसा व्यक्ति सतोगुणी कहलाता है।

           अर्थात भगवद्गीता के इस श्लोक में भगवान ने सतोगुणि व्यक्ति के लक्षण को बताया है।

One who performs his duty without attachment to material modes, without ego, with determination and enthusiasm and unperturbed by success or failure, is called a virtuous worker.

Purport: A person in Krishna consciousness is always transcendental to the modes of material nature.  He has no desire for the result of the work assigned to him, because he is beyond falsehood, ego and pride.

Yet he is always full of enthusiasm till the completion of his work.  He is not worried about the sufferings that happen to him, he is always enthusiastic.  He does not care about success or failure, and he remains equal in happiness and sorrow.

Such a person is called Satoguni.

That is, in this verse of the Bhagavad Gita, the Lord has told the characteristics of a person in the mode of goodness.

देवशयनी एकादशी व्रत कथा

आषाढ़ मास के शुक्ल पक्ष में आने वाली देवशयनी एकादशी से लेकर कार्तिक मास की शुक्ल पक्ष में आने वाली देवउठनी एकादशी तक के काल में कोई भी शुभ कार्य नहीं किया जाता है।

                        क्योंकि इस शयन काल में भगवान श्री विष्णु योग निद्रा ग्रहण करते हैं। इसी शयन एकादशी से चातुर्मास का भी प्रारंभ होता है।

                  देवशयनी एकादशी का माहात्म्य भविष्योत्तर पुराण में वर्णित है। एक बार जब युधिष्ठिर महाराज ने भगवान श्री कृष्ण से इस एकादशी के बारे में पूछा ,तो भगवान उन्हें बताते हैं कि एक बार श्री नारद मुनि ने ब्रम्हा जी से इस एकादशी के बारे में पूछा था। तब उत्तर में ब्रम्हा जी ने बताया कि प्राचीन काल में सूर्य वंश में जन्मे मान्धाता नामक अत्यंत बलवान, पराक्रमी और सत्यवादी राजा थे।

               उनके राज्य में सभी जीव प्रसन्न,और सुखपूर्वक रहते थे। परंतु कुछ समय के पश्चात विधि के विधान से लगातार तीन वर्षों तक बारिश न होने के कारण उनके राज्य में अन्न की उपज नहीं हुई, जिस कारण से लोग बहुत दुखी हो गए।

               वे सारे लोग हतास अवस्था में राजा के पास आकर कहने लगे कि हे राजन, आपके शासन में हमें कभी भी किसी पीड़ा या संकट का सामना कभी नहीं करना पड़ा, लेकिन इस समय में हम सभी बहुत विचलित हो गए हैं, कृप्या आप हमारी पीड़ाओं का निवारण करें।

                 आप कुछ ऐसा उपाय करें, कि जिससे इस पूरे राज्य में पुनः सुख और शांति का निर्माण हो जाए। तब इस पर राजा ने उनसे कहा कि हमारे शास्त्र में कहा गया है कि, राजा के किए गए पाप कर्म के कारण ही ऐसी स्थिति उत्पन्न होती है।

              परंतु मुझे स्मरण ही नहीं की,मुझसे कौन सा ऐसा पाप हुआ है , लेकिन फिर भी मैं अपने प्रजा के हित के लिए इसका उपाय अवश्य खोजूंगा।

                राजा मान्धाता ने अपने अधिकारियों और सैनिकों के साथ वन में प्रस्थान किया। एक दिन वन में उनकी मुलाकात अंगिरा मुनि से हुई, तो अंगिरा मुनि को प्रणाम करके राजा ने अपना सारा वृतांत अंगिरा मुनि से कह सुनाया।

                तब अंगिरा मुनि ने राजा से कहा कि, आपके राज्य में कोई एक  अज्ञानी और अयोग्य व्यक्ति तपस्या कर रहा है, और क्योंकि ये शास्त्रों के विरुद्ध है, इसलिए आपका सारा राज्य इस पाप को भुगत रहा है।

                तब राजा ने अंगिरा मुनि से इसका कोई आध्यात्मिक समाधान बताने की विनती की, तो मुनि ने कहा कि यदि आप और आपकी समस्त प्रजा आषाढ़ मास के शुक्ल पक्ष में आने वाली एकादशी का श्रद्धा पूर्वक पालन करेंगे, तो राज्य में वर्षा अवश्य होगी, और अन्न की उत्पत्ति भी होगी, तथा पहले की तरह राज्य में शांति और समृद्धि भी होगी।

                 जो भी व्यक्ति इस व्रत का पालन करता है,उसके भौतिक और आध्यात्मिक जीवन में आने वाली सभी बाधाएं नष्ट हो जाती हैं। अंगिरा मुनि को आदर पूर्वक आभार व्यक्त करने के बाद राजा अपने राज्य को लौट गए।

            राजा ने शयन एकादशी के दिन पूरे परिवार सहित इस व्रत का नियम पूर्वक पालन किया, और समस्त प्रजा ने भी इस एकादशी व्रत का नियम पूर्वक पालन किया। कुछ समय पश्चात राज्य में बारिश हुई, और राज्य फिर से सुखी और समृद्ध बन गया।

             भगवान श्री कृष्ण युधिष्ठिर से कहते हैं कि जो भी व्यक्ति मुझे प्रसन्न करने का इक्षा रखता है, उसे शयन एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए।

               भगवान कहते हैं कि इस व्रत के माहात्म्य को श्रद्धा पूर्वक श्रवण करने वाले व्यक्ति के सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं, और मैं स्वयं उसे अपनी भक्ति प्रदान करता हूं।

              एकादशी के दिन भगवद्गीता और भागवतम जैसे ग्रंथों का पठन अवश्य करें। अधिक से अधिक भगवान की सुंदर लीलाओं का श्रवण करें और उनके पवित्र नाम का कीर्तन करें, तथा भगवान की प्रसन्नता के लिए इस दिन अधिक से अधिक हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का जप करें।

।auspicious work is performed during the period from Devshayani Ekadashi falling in the Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month to Devuthani Ekadashi falling in the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.

Because Lord Shri Vishnu takes yoga sleep during this sleeping period.  Chaturmas also starts from this Shayan Ekadashi.

The greatness of Devshayani Ekadashi is described in Bhavishyottara Purana.  Once Yudhishthira Maharaj asked Lord Shri Krishna about this Ekadashi, the Lord tells him that once Shri Narad Muni had asked Brahma ji about this Ekadashi.  Then in reply Brahma ji told that in ancient times there was a very strong, mighty and truthful king named Mandhata, born in Surya dynasty.

All living beings lived happily and happily in his kingdom.  But after some time, due to lack of rain for three consecutive years due to the rule of law, there was no production of food grains in his state, due to which the people became very sad.

All those people came to the king in desperation and said that under your rule we have never faced any pain or crisis, but in this time we all are very disturbed, please take care of our sufferings.  Troubleshoot

     should take such measures that happiness and peace can be created again in this entire state.  Then the king told him that it is said in our scriptures that such a situation arises only because of the sins committed by the king.

But I did not remember, what such sin I have committed, but still I will definitely find a solution for the benefit of my subjects.

King Mandhata left for the forest with his officers and soldiers.  One day he met Angira Muni in the forest, then after saluting Angira Muni, the king told his whole story to Angira Muni.

Then Angira Muni told the king that, in your kingdom an ignorant and unfit person is doing penance, and because it is against the scriptures, your whole kingdom is suffering from this sin.

Then the king requested Angira Muni to suggest a spiritual solution to this, to which Muni said that if you and all your subjects observe the Ekadashi which falls on the Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month with devotion, then there will be rain in the kingdom, and food  will also be born, and there will be peace and prosperity in the state as before.

Whoever observes this fast, all the obstacles in his physical and spiritual life are destroyed.  After respectfully expressing gratitude to Angira Muni, the king returned to his kingdom.

On the day of Shayan Ekadashi, the whole family along with this fast was observed according to the rules, and all the people also observed this Ekadashi fast according to the rules.  After some time it rained in the kingdom, and the kingdom again became happy and prosperous.            

                

               Lord Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira that whoever aspires to please me, he must fast on Shayan Ekadashi.

The Lord says that all the sins of a person who listens to the greatness of this fast with devotion are destroyed, and I myself give him my devotion.

Do read books like Bhagavadgita and Bhagavatam on Ekadashi.  Listen to the Lord's beautiful pastimes more and more and chant His holy name, and chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra as much as possible on this day for the Lord's pleasure.

योगिनी एकादशी व्रत कथा

इसकी कथा कुछ इस प्रकार है, एक बार की बात है, धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कहने लगे कि हे भगवन आषाढ़ कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का संबोधन क्या है?

                तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि हे राजन आषाढ़ कृष्ण एकादशी का नाम योगिनी है, इस व्रत के पालन से व्यक्ति गंभीर पाप कर्म, और भवसागर से मुक्ति प्राप्त करता है। अब मैं तुमसे पुराणों में वर्णन किया हुआ सुंदर कथा कहता हूं,ध्यान पूर्वक सुनो।

             स्वर्ग की अल्कापुरी नामक नगरी में कुबेर का राज्य था, जो देवताओं के कोषाध्यक्ष हैं। वह शिव भक्त था और प्रतिदिन भगवान शिव की पूजा किया करता था।

             हेम नाम का यक्ष उनका माली था, जो मानसरोवर से सुंदर फूल लाकर कुबेर को देता, और जिसका उपयोग कुबेर शिव जी की उपासना में किया करता था।

             हेम की पत्नी बहुत ही सुंदर थी, उसकी पत्नी का नाम विशालाक्षी था, तथा वह अपनी पत्नी के प्रति बहुत आसक्त था। एक दिन वह मानसरोवर से पुष्प तो ले आया, परंतु पत्नी से आसक्त होने के कारण वह अपनी पत्नी से हास्य विनोद तथा उसके साथ रमण करने लगा।

             इधर राजा उसकी दोपहर तक राह देखता रहा, और अंत में राजा कुबेर ने अपने एक सैनिक को आज्ञा दी कि, तुम जाकर माली के न आने का कारण पता करो, क्योंकि वह अभी तक पुष्प लेकर नहीं आया।

          सैनिकों ने कहा कि महाराज वह पापी अत्यंत कामी है, अवश्य ही  वह अपनी स्त्री के साथ हास्य विनोद, और रमण कर रहा होगा, इसलिए वह नहीं आया है।

           यह सुनकर कुबेर ने क्रोधित होकर उसे बुलाया, हेम माली राजा के भय से कांपता हुआ उनके समीप पहुंचा। राजा कुबेर ने कहा कि अरे पापी,नीच ,कामी तुमने मेरे परम पूज्यनीय शिव जी का अनादर किया है, इसलिए मैं तुम्हें श्राप देता हूं कि तू स्त्री का वियोग सहेगा, और मृत्यु लोक में जाकर कोढ़ी होगा।

              कुबेर के श्राप से हेम माली का स्वर्ग से पतन हो गया, और वह उसी क्षण पृथ्वी पर जा गिरा। पृथ्वी पर आते ही उसके पूरे शरीर में श्वेत कोढ़ हो गया, और उसकी पत्नी भी उसी समय अन्तर्ध्यान हो गई।

              मृत्यु लोक में आकर माली ने अनेक दुख भोगे, और भयानक जंगल में जाकर बिना अन्न और जल के भटकता रहा। उसे रात्रि में निद्रा भी नहीं आती थी, परंतु शिव जी की पूजा के प्रभाव से उसको पिछले जन्म के स्मृति का ज्ञान अवश्य रहा।

             घूमते घूमते एक दिन वह मार्कण्डेय ऋषि के आश्रम में पहुंच गया, जिनकी आयु सात कल्प है, और जिनका आश्रम ब्रम्हा की सभा के समान लगता था।

             उन्हें देखकर हेम ने दूर से ही अनेक बार उन्हें शाष्टांग प्रणाम किया, यह देख कर दयावान मार्कण्डेय ऋषि ने उससे पूछा कि, तुमने ऐसा कौन सा पाप किया है , जिसके कारण तुम्हारी ऐसी हालत हो गई है।

               तब हेम माली ने सारा वृतांत ऋषि से कह सुनाया। यह सुनकर ऋषि बोले, निश्चित ही तुमने मेरे सम्मुख सत्य वचन कहे हैं, इसलिए तेरे उद्धार के लिए मैं तुम्हें एक व्रत बताता हूं।

             यदि तू आषाढ़ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की योगिनी एकादशी का विधि पूर्वक व्रत करेगा तो, तेरे सारे पाप नष्ट हो जाएंगे। यह सुनकर माली ने अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर मुनि को शाष्टांग प्रणाम किया, मुनि ने उसे स्नेह से उठाया।

           हेम माली ने मुनि के कहे अनुसार योगिनी एकादशी का व्रत विधि पूर्वक किया, और इस व्रत के प्रभाव से वह कोढ़ से मुक्त होकर अपने पुराने स्वरूप में आकर, अपनी पत्नी के साथ सुख पूर्वक रहने लगा।

        तब भगवान श्री कृष्ण ने कहा कि हे राजन यह योगिनी एकादशी का व्रत अठासी हजार ब्राम्हणों को भोजन कराने के बराबर फल देने वाला है। इस व्रत को करने से व्यक्ति सभी प्रकार के पापों से मुक्त हो जाता है।

             एकादशी के दिन अधिक से अधिक भगवान की सुंदर लीलाओं का श्रवण करें,भगवद्गीता, भागवतम आदि का पठन करें, और हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र का कम से कम सोलह अथवा पच्चीस माला का जप अवश्य करें।

     Its story is something like this, once upon a time, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir started saying that O Lord, what is the address of the Ekadashi of Ashada Krishna Paksha?

Then Lord Shri Krishna said that O Rajan, the name of Ashada Krishna Ekadashi is Yogini, by observing this fast one gets freedom from grave sins, karma and Bhavsagar.  Now I tell you a beautiful story described in Puranas, listen carefully.

In the heavenly city called Alkapuri, there was the kingdom of Kubera, who is the treasurer of the deities.  He was a devotee of Shiva and used to worship Lord Shiva daily.

A Yaksha named Hem was his gardener, who brought beautiful flowers from Mansarovar and gave them to Kuber, and which Kuber used to worship Shiva.

Hem's wife was very beautiful, his wife's name was Vishalakshi, and he was very attached to his wife.  One day he brought flowers from Mansarovar, but being attached to his wife, he started joking with his wife and enjoying with her.         

Here the king kept waiting for him till noon, and at last King Kuber ordered one of his soldiers to go and find out the reason for the gardener not coming, because he has not yet brought flowers.

The soldiers said that Maharaj, that sinner is very lustful, he must be having fun and enjoyment with his wife, that's why he has not come.

Hearing this, Kuber got angry and called him, Hem reached near him trembling with fear of the gardener king.  King Kuber said that O sinner, vile, lustful, you have disrespected my most respected Lord Shiva, so I curse you that you will suffer the separation of a woman, and will be a leper after going to the world of death.

Hem Mali fell from heaven due to Kubera's curse, and he fell down to earth at that very moment.  As soon as he came to earth, his whole body got white leprosy, and his wife also disappeared at the same time.

After coming to the land of death, the gardener suffered many sorrows, and went wandering in the terrible forest without food and water.  He could not even sleep at night, but due to the effect of worshiping Lord Shiva, he definitely had the knowledge of the memory of his previous birth.

One day while roaming around, he reached the ashram of sage Markandeya, whose age is seven Kalpas, and whose ashram looked like the assembly of Brahma.

              

       Seeing him, Hem bowed down to him many times from a distance, seeing this, the merciful sage Markandeya asked him, what sin have you committed, because of which you have become like this.

Then Hem Mali told the whole story to the sage.  Hearing this, the sage said, surely you have spoken true words in front of me, so I tell you a vow for your salvation.

If you observe Yogini Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Ashadha methodically, all your sins will be destroyed.  Hearing this, the gardener was very happy and bowed down to the sage, the sage lifted him up with affection.

Hem Mali observed the fast of Yogini Ekadashi according to the sage's advice, and with the effect of this fast, he became free from leprosy and returned to his old form and lived happily with his wife.

Then Lord Shri Krishna said that O king, this Yogini Ekadashi fast is going to give results equal to feeding eighty thousand Brahmins.  By observing this fast, a person becomes free from all kinds of sins.

On the day of Ekadashi, listen to God's beautiful pastimes as much as possible, read Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavatam etc., and chant Hare Krishna mahamantra at least sixteen or twenty five rounds.
