आज से लगभग 500 वर्ष पूर्व जब चैतन्य महाप्रभु का अवतरण पश्चिम बंगाल के नवद्वीप नामक गांव में हुआ था, उस समय जगाई मधाई नाम के दो महा पापी भी वहां रहते थे।
जगाई मधाई ऐसे गुंडे थे जिनका नाम सुनकर ही सब कांप उठते थे। हिरण्याक्ष मतलब लोभ का स्वरूप है, हिरण्यकशिपु गर्व का स्वरूप है, रावण काम का स्वरूप है, कुम्हकरण भ्रम का स्वरूप है, शिशुपाल ईर्ष्या का स्वरूप है, और दंडवक्र क्रोध का स्वरूप है , और इन सबको एक साथ मिला दिया जाए तो इतने बड़े अधम पापी थे जगाई और मधाई। कोई भी ऐसा पाप कर्म नहीं था,जिसे इन्होंने नहीं किया था।
इन दोनों ने इतने पाप किए थे कि एक बार यमराज ने कहा कि ये तो इतने बड़े पापी हैं कि इनके लिए तो नर्क की यातना भी कम पड़ेगी, इनके सजा के लिए तो अलग से जगाई मधाई डिपार्टमेंट खोलना पड़ेगा जिसमें इन्हें इनके पाप कर्म की सजा दी जाएगी।
एक दिन चैतन्य महाप्रभु अपने शिष्य नित्यानंद प्रभु और हरिदास ठाकुर को आदेश देते हैं कि आप घर घर जाकर लोगों कृष्ण नाम का प्रचार करिए। उनसे कहिए कि वो कृष्ण का नाम लें, कृष्ण नाम का भजन करें और हमेशा उनका ही गुणगान करें।
महाप्रभु की आज्ञा पाकर वो दोनों हरि नाम की महिमा का प्रचार करने निकले तो उन्होंने देखा कि एक जगह पर बहुत भीड़ थी, और वहां दो व्यक्ति हैं जो कि कभी एक दूसरे का बाल खींच रहे हैं, कभी एक दूसरे को थप्पड़ मार रहे हैं, और कभी एक दूसरे को आलिंगन कर रहे हैं। वहां खड़े लोग उन्हें देखकर मजा ले रहे हैं।
नित्यानंद प्रभु ने वहां मौजूद एक व्यक्ति से पूछा कि ये दोनों कौन हैं, तो उस व्यक्ति ने कहा कि ये वैसे तो ब्राह्मण परिवार से हैं, किंतु कुसंगत में पड़कर ये अब सभी प्रकार के पाप कर्म कर रहे हैं और अभी इनका शराब का नशा है ।
अब नित्यानंद प्रभु सोचने लगे कि इन दोनों को अगर मैं भक्त बना देता हूं तो हमारे चैतन्य महाप्रभु की ख्याति और बढ़ जाएगी। तब लोगों का विश्वास और ज्यादा बढ़ जाएगा कि महाप्रभु की भक्ति में बहुत ज्यादा शक्ति है।
हरिदास ठाकुर उनके समीप जाने से डर रहे थे, लेकिन फिर दोनों जगाई मधाई के पास जाकर बोले कि बोलो कृष्ण, भजो कृष्ण, करो कृष्ण शिक्षा। पहले तो उन दोनों ने उन्हें देखा कि इनकी हिम्मत कैसे हुई हमारे पास आने की, उन्हें लगा कि पता नहीं ये मनुष्य हैं, या कि भूत प्रेत हैं और फिर उन्होंने एक दूसरे को देखा और उन्हें मारने के लिए दौड़ाने लगे।
अब वो दोनों दौड़ते जा रहे हैं और उनके पीछे पीछे जगाई मधाई उन्हें मारने के लिए दौड़ रहे हैं। नित्यानंद प्रभु और हरिदास ठाकुर एक बार भी पलट कर पीछे नहीं देखते बस भागते ही जा रहे हैं।
हरिदास ठाकुर नित्यानंद प्रभु से कहते हैं कि क्या जरूरत थी उन गुंडे बदमाश को हरिनाम के बारे में प्रचार करने की आज आपने तो मुझे बुरी तरह से फंसा दिया था। नित्यानंद प्रभु कहते हैं कि ये तो हमारे मालिक का आदेश था कि घर घर जाकर हरि नाम का प्रचार करो, तो मैं क्या करता?
कुछ समय बाद उन्होंने पलट कर देखा कि अब वो हमारे पीछे नहीं आ रहे हैं तो, उनकी जान में जान आई। अब वो श्री वास आश्रम में पहुंचे तो वहां पर स्वामी अद्वैताचार्य, और श्री चैतन्य महाप्रभु बैठे हुए थे, तो हरिदास ठाकुर ने उनसे जाकर कहा कि आज तो हमारा जीवन जा रहा था , नित्यानंद प्रभु ने तो आज मुझे बुरे तरह फंसा दिया था, लेकिन भगवान ने हमें बचा लिया।
स्वामी अद्वैताचार्य, ने पूछा कि क्या हुआ?, तो हरिदास ठाकुर कहते हैं कि दो माताली हैं उन्हें प्रचार करने गए थे ये , और वो हमें मारने के लिए दौड़े। अब अद्वैताचार्य कहते हैं कि तो क्या हुआ ये नित्यानंद भी माताली और वो भी माताली (माताली मतलब कृष्ण प्रेम में माताली) और तू क्या कर रहा था इनके साथ जाकर।
हरिदास ठाकुर कहते हैं कि ये तो कृष्ण के प्रेम में इतना खोए रहते हैं कि कभी कभी मुझे मगरमच्छ के ऊपर बैठ कर कहते हैं कि यहां बैठ कर कृष्ण का नाम लो, और वो मगरमच्छ के ऊपर बैठ कर कृष्ण नाम का जप करते रहते हैं। ये तो मुझे बहुत ज्यादा परेशान करते हैं।
कई बार तो ये बच्चियों का हाथ पकड़ कर कहते हैं कि तुम मुझसे शादी करोगी क्या?और फिर लोग इनके साथ मुझे भी मारने के लिए दौड़ने लगते हैं। स्वामी अद्वैताचार्य ने हरिदास ठाकुर से कहा कि यदि नित्यानंद ने उन दोनों पर कृपा अवलोकन कर दिया है तो वो दोनों एक दिन अवश्य ही भक्त बनेंगे।
अब चैतन्य महाप्रभु ने पूछा कि क्या हुआ? तो वहां उपस्थित लोग कहने लगे कि जगाई, मधाई इतने बड़े पापी हैं जिन्होंने कोई भी पाप छोड़ा ही नहीं है , और उनको प्रचार करने गए थे ये लोग।
नित्यानंद प्रभु के कृपा से उन्हें स्वीकृति प्रदान हुई ,और जगाई और मधाई गंगा जी के जिस घाट पर नहाते थे उस घाट को बदल बदल कर धीरे धीरे, श्रीवास आंगन के पास जो घाट था , अब वो वहां आकर रहने लगे, जहां पर चैतन्य महाप्रभु रोज रात को कीर्तन किया करते थे।
अब रोज श्रीवास आंगन में रात को हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे का कीर्तन होता और वो जगाई , मधाई नशे में चूर होकर इस कीर्तन को सुनते रहते।
एक दिन महाप्रभु कहीं जा रहे थे, तो जगाई, मधाई उन्हें रास्ते में मिले और उन्होंने महाप्रभु से कहा कि निमाई तेरा टोली तो बहुत अच्छा है , बहुत अच्छा कीर्तन करते हो तुम लोग, बहुत सुंदर हरि कीर्तन करते हो।
उन्होंने कहा कि तुम बताना कि अगर तुम दुर्गा जी का कीर्तन करोगे तो सारा खर्चा हम लोग देंगे। निमाई उन्हें अनसुना करते हुए आगे बढ़ गए।
एक दिन शाम के समय नित्यानंद प्रभु उस रास्ते से अकेले जा रहे थे जहां जगाई, मधाई रहते थे, तो जगाई मधाई ने पूछा कि कौन हो, तो उन्होंने उत्तर दिया कि मैं नित्यानंद।
अब मधाई को तुरंत याद आ गया कि अरे यही व्यक्ति तो उस दिन हमारे पास कृष्ण नाम का प्रचार करने आया था , तो जिस मटके से वो शराब पी रहा था उसी मटके को फेंक कर नित्यानंद प्रभु के माथे पर जोर से मारा।
अब नित्यानंद प्रभु के माथे से खून बहने लगा,
परंतु वो फिर भी उन्हें कह रहे थे कि कोई बात नहीं आप मुझे मारो ,लेकिन आप कृष्ण नाम का जप अवश्य करो। ये देखकर जगाई ने मधाई को उन्हें मारने से रोका ,और कहने लगा कि इन्हें मत मारो तुम देख नहीं रहे हो कि तुम उन्हें मार रहे हो ,लेकिन वो फिर भी हमारे भलाई के लिए हमें हरि नाम का जप करने के लिए कह रहे हैं। वहां मौजूद लोगों से ये खबर महाप्रभु तक पहुंच गया, महाप्रभु दौड़ कर वहां पहुंचे और आते ही उन्होंने सुदर्शन चक्र का आवाहन किया। महाप्रभु ने कहा कि जो मेरे भक्तों को किसी प्रकार से भी चोट पहुंचाता है मैं उसे कभी क्षमा नहीं कर सकता हूं।अब जैसे ही जगाई मधाई ने सुदर्शन चक्र को देखा तो इनका सारा नशा उतर गया।
डर के मारे ये दोनों पापी महाप्रभु के चरणों में गिर पड़े। नित्यानंद प्रभु भी महाप्रभु के चरणों में गिर पड़े, और उन्होंने कहा कि नहीं महाप्रभु आपका ये अवतार संहार के लिए नहीं बल्कि केवल प्रेम प्रदान करने के लिए हुआ है।
तब महाप्रभु ने सुदर्शन चक्र को वापस भेज दिया, और वो दोनों पापी महाप्रभु के चरणों में गिर कर माफी मांगने लगे। अब भी महाप्रभु बहुत क्रोधित थे , तो नित्यानंद प्रभु ने कहा कि महाप्रभु जगाई ने मधाई को मुझे मारने से रोका था। इतना सुनते ही महाप्रभु का क्रोध शांत हो गया, और उन्होंने जगाई को उठा कर उसका आलिंगन कर लिया।
वो जगाई को अपने गले से लगा लेते हैं, उसे आशिर्वाद प्रदान करते हैं। अब ये देख कर मधाई रोने लगता है कि हम दोनों साथ में थे, इसको तो कृपा मिल गई लेकिन मुझे नहीं मिली। मधाई महाप्रभु के चरणों में गिर पड़ा, तो महाप्रभु ने कहा कि तूने जिसके प्रति अपराध किया है वही तेरा अपराध क्षमा कर सकता है।
अब मधाई नित्यानंद प्रभु के चरणों में गिर कर माफी मांगता है, फिर नित्यानंद प्रभु उसे उठा कर अपने गले से लगाते हैं और दोनों को लेकर हरि नाम संकीर्तन में जाते हैं। गंगा तट पर ले जाकर उन्हें स्नान करवाते हैं, दोनों का मुंडन करवाते हैं, और उनको हरि नाम में लगाया जाता है। अब हरि नाम में नाचते हुए उनके आंखों से अश्रु बहने लगते हैं।
अब वो दोनों महाप्रभु से पूछते हैं कि हमारे लिए अब क्या आदेश है, तो महाप्रभु कहते हैं कि आप नित्य हरि नाम का प्रचार कीजिए और हमेशा गंगा घाट के साफ सफाई का ध्यान रखिए, हेमशा इन्हें साफ सुथरा रखिए। महाप्रभु की कृपा मिलने से इतने अधम कोटि के जगाई, मधाई जो कि भगवान के अनन्य भक्त बन गए, और अंत में उन्हें वैकुंठ की प्राप्ति हुई।

About 500 years ago, when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had descended in a village called Navadvipa in West Bengal, two great sinners named Jagai Madhai were also living there.
Jagai Madhai was such a goon whose name made everyone tremble. Hiranyaksha means the form of greed, Hiranyakashipu is the form of pride, Ravana is the form of lust, Kumhkaran is the form of illusion, Shishupala is the form of jealousy, and Dandavakra is the form of anger, and if all these are mixed together then such a great evil. Jagai and Madhai were sinners. There was no such sinful deed, which he did not commit.
Both of them had committed so many sins that once Yamraj said that they are such big sinners that even the torture of hell will be less for them, for their punishment, a separate madhai department will have to be opened in which they will be punished for their sinful deeds. will be given.
One day Chaitanya Mahaprabhu orders his disciples Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakura to go door to door and preach the name of Krishna to the people. Tell them to take the name of Krishna, chant the name of Krishna and praise him always.
After receiving the permission of Mahaprabhu, both of them went out to preach the glory of Hari Naam, then they saw that there was a huge crowd at one place, and there are two persons who are sometimes pulling each other's hair, sometimes slapping each other, And sometimes hugging each other. The people standing there are enjoying seeing him.
Nityananda Prabhu asked a person present there who were these two, then that person said that they are from Brahmin family, but by falling in bad company, they are doing all kinds of sinful deeds and now they are intoxicated with alcohol
Now Nityananda Prabhu started thinking that if I make these two devotees then the fame of our Chaitanya Mahaprabhu will increase further. Then people's faith will increase more that there is a lot of power in the devotion of Mahaprabhu.
Haridas Thakur was afraid to go near him, but then both of them went to Jagai Madhai and said that speak Krishna, worship Krishna, do Krishna education. At first both of them looked at them how dare they come near us, they did not know whether they were humans or ghosts and then they looked at each other and started running to kill them.
Now both of them are running and Jagai Madhai is running behind them to kill them. Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakura do not look back even once, they just keep running.
Haridas Thakur says to Nityananda Prabhu that what was the need to preach about Harinam to that goon scoundrel, today you had trapped me badly. Nityananda Prabhu says that it was our master's order to go from house to house and propagate the name of Hari, so what would I have done?
After some time, he turned around and saw that now he is not coming after us, so his life came to life. Now when he reached Shri Vas Ashram, Swami Advaitacharya and Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu were sitting there, then Haridas Thakur went to him and said that today our life was going on, Nityananda Prabhu had trapped me badly today, but God saved us.
Swami Advaitacharya, asked what happened?, then Haridas Thakur says that there are two Matali's, he had gone to preach them, and they ran to kill us. Now Advaitacharya says that so what happened, this Nityananda is also Matali and that too Matali (Mataali means Matali in Krishna's love) and what were you doing by going with them.
Haridas Thakura says that he is so lost in the love of Krishna that sometimes he sits on the crocodile and asks me to sit here and chant the name of Krishna, and he keeps chanting the name of Krishna while sitting on the crocodile. This bothers me a lot.
Sometimes they hold the hands of the girls and say that you will marry me, and then people start running along with them to kill me too. Swami Advaitacharya told Haridas Thakur that if Nityananda had shown kindness to both of them, they would definitely become devotees one day.
Now Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked what happened? So the people present there started saying that Jagai, Madhai are such big sinners who have not left any sin at all, and these people had gone to preach them.
By the grace of Nityananda Prabhu, he was approved, and both of them woke up, changed the ghat where they used to bathe in the Madhai Ganga, and gradually started living in the ghat near Srivas Angan, where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to bathe daily. Used to do kirtan at night.
Now every night in the courtyard of Shrivas, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Ram, Hare Ram, Ram Ram, Hare Hare would be chanted and he would wake up, get drunk and listen to this kirtan.
One day Mahaprabhu was going somewhere, then Jagai, Madhai met him on the way and he told Mahaprabhu that Nimai Tera Toli is very good, you people do very good kirtan, very beautiful Hari kirtan.
He said that you tell that if you do kirtan of Durga ji then we will pay all the expenses. Nimai went ahead ignoring them.
One day in the evening, Nityananda Prabhu was walking alone on the way where Jagai Madhai lived, then Jagai Madhai asked who he was, to which he replied that I was Nityananda.
Now Madhai immediately remembered that this person had come to us that day to preach the name of Krishna, so he threw the same pot from which he was drinking and hit Nityananda Prabhu hard on his forehead.
Now the blood started flowing from Nityananda Prabhu's forehead,
But he was still telling them that no problem you kill me but you must chant the name of Krishna, seeing this Jagai stopped Madhai from killing him and said don't kill him you are not seeing that you kill him But still they are telling us to chant Hari Naam for our good.
This news reached Mahaprabhu from the people present there, Mahaprabhu reached there running and as soon as he arrived, he invoked Sudarshan Chakra. Now as soon as these two woke up and saw the Sudarshan Chakra, all their intoxication got removed.
Out of fear these two sinners fell at the feet of Mahaprabhu. Nityananda Prabhu also fell at the feet of Mahaprabhu, and he said that no Mahaprabhu, this incarnation of yours has not happened for destruction but only for giving love.
Then Mahaprabhu sent back the Sudarshan Chakra, and both the sinners fell at Mahaprabhu's feet and begged for forgiveness. Even now Mahaprabhu was very angry, so Nityananda Prabhu said that Mahaprabhu was stopped by Jagai. On hearing this, Mahaprabhu's anger calmed down, and he lifted Jagi and embraced him.
He hugs Jagai, blesses him. Now Madhai starts crying seeing that both of us were together, he got grace but I didn't. When Madhai fell at Mahaprabhu's feet, Mahaprabhu said that the person against whom you have committed a crime, only he can forgive your crime.
Now Madhai falls at the feet of Nityananda Prabhu and apologizes, then Nityananda Prabhu picks him up and hugs him and takes both of them to chant the name of Hari. Taking them to the banks of the Ganges, they are bathed, both are shaved, and they are chanted in the name of Hari. Now while dancing in the name of Hari, tears start flowing from his eyes.
Now both of them ask Mahaprabhu what is the order for us now, then Mahaprabhu says that you should propagate the name of Hari everyday and always take care of the cleanliness of Ganga Ghat, always keep it clean. Due to the grace of Mahaprabhu, so many lowly people were awakened, Madhai who became devotees of God, and finally they got Vaikunth.
