असंयतात्मना योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मति:।
Translation by Srila Prabhupada: For one whose mind is uncontrolled, self-realization is a difficult task, but for one whose mind is controlled and who endeavors by appropriate means, success is certain. That is My opinion.
Purport: Here the Lord declares that one who does not adopt the proper means to detach his mind from material engagements can hardly be successful in self-realization.
Practicing yoga while the mind is absorbed in material enjoyment is like trying to ignite a fire by pouring water on it. Without controlling the mind, the practice of yoga is a waste of time.
Such a display of yoga may be materially beneficial, but as far as self-realization is concerned, it is all useless. Therefore, one should control the mind by constantly engaging it in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.
Without being engaged in Krishna consciousness, it is impossible to steady the mind. A Krishna conscious person easily achieves the result of yoga practice without any extra endeavor, but a yoga practitioner cannot achieve success without being Krishna conscious.
In this verse of the Bhagavad-gita, the Lord explains the difference between a yogi and a Krishna conscious person. The Lord says that practicing yoga while the mind is absorbed in material things is like trying to ignite a fire by pouring water on it instead of ghee. We all know that to ignite a fire, we need to add ghee (clarified butter) to it, not water, because if we put water on the fire, it will extinguish it instead of igniting it. Similarly, while engaging in yoga while being attached to material enjoyments may give us some temporary benefit, it cannot lead to self-realization.
The Lord says that one can easily control the mind by constantly fixing it on Him. It is impossible to control the mind without being connected to Krishna consciousness.
A person in Krishna consciousness can easily attain the results of yoga practice without much effort, but one who practices yoga while being attached to material enjoyments cannot achieve success without being in Krishna consciousness.
